Biography: Gary Soto

Gary Soto was born in Fresno, California on April 12, 1952. Although his grandparents were born in Mexico, his parents were California natives. Garys parents spoke primarily English but he learned to speak Spanish from his relatives. Gary Sotos father, Manuel Soto, was severely injured in an industrial accident and died two days later when Gary was simply five. His fathers death forced the family into poverty. Garys mother, Angie Soto, was forced to work long, hard hours to invite her children. Garys older brother, Rick, and unripeneder sister, Debra, often had to stay al-Qaeda only if because they couldnt allow day care. Trying not to get their mammy in trouble, the kids never told anyone.
